Hi everyone, I as hoping someone from New York can help me. I live in Orlando, FL. I have my bachelors degree in Speech and have been practicing as an SLP-A for 2 years now. I'm trying to move to New York and am trying to figure out what I have to do to get this certification. I have looked on websites and I just became confused, I called people and no one returns my calls, I've emailed and am still waiting to hear back from them. I need to figure this out soon because I want to get this process over with ASAP. If anyone can please help me, anyone who's gone through the same scenario, or just someone to point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it. I'm beginning to pull my hair out.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble with trying to find a job/certification in NY. Unfortunately, I don't have any information about that, but I was wondering if you could help me. I having been living in Orlando for a little over a year now, and I have had a terrible time trying to find a job. I graduated from UF with a bachelor's in CSD and I worked as a SLPA while living in Gainesville. I would LOVE to find a job here in Orlando and have continued to search since I moved here, but I haven't had any luck. If you have any suggestions or information I would greatly appreciate it! Best of luck with everything and I hope you find something in NY soon. :)

what i did not too long ago was googling Speech therapy clinics in Orlando or even Kissimmee if you're willing to do the commute and call them personally. The majority of them will tell you to send your resume. I work in a clinic in Kissimmee. I'm not sure if they're hiring but you can call and see, the clinic is called Bridge of Hope of Central Florida. There's another one here called Yakety Yak, Small Steps, theres this place called Therapy World, i know the last time I checked they were looking for someone for the afternoons. you can try UCP in Orlando my friend recently got a position there.

I asked your question on twitter. One of the SLPs there stated she was not sure NY even had SLPAs. She has never seen or heard of one in the state. However, she gave me a couple of websites where you might be able to get started. If you already have them - I'm sorry.

This is where you get certification http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/ to work in schools.

This is licensure http://www.op.nysed.gov/

I wrote a blog post about this a few weeks ago - and had a horrible time trying to find information. http://speechadventures.com/2012/12/30/adventures-in-certification-part-two/

Good luck. Sorry if you already had these links - this was the only help I received when I asked your question.

i went through the first two already but i'll check the third one out. Thank you!

Hey, this is kind of funny because I want to move to Orlando :). Anywho, getting licensed here is complicated. With your B.A. you can apply for initial certification, but I think you need 3 years of experience. If you are granted initial certification, I think you get 5 years to complete a master's degree for permanent certification. But it's so complicated to deal with NY D.O.E. and most likely it will take many months for them to grant you the initial certificate even if you're qualified.

The TSSLD/TSHH license will allow you to work in the schools only. To work outside of schools, if you want to still work with children, you will need both the TSSLD/TSHH and your C's.

Calling the state is kind of useless because on top of D.O.E. staff being rude and impolite, you are likely to get different responses from whomever answers.

Orlando is a good place to work with your bachelors, with your masters even better, master SLPs are in high demand down here. I knew the whole 5 year to complete Masters and it taking a few months to go through, and about working in the school system. I just dont know if I have to file for it on my own and send in all the paperwork (and if so, what paperwork do I have to send) or if I can apply for a position and if I get it, have everything processed through the school. I have an internship i did for almost a year before I graduated plus all my actual job experience. I just need to know which way would be simpler so I can begin the process. Thank you for your help.

Thanks for the info. I still have 2 years before I complete my masters, but I'm happy to know there is a demand in O-town. In your case, if you get hired by a school district before getting certification, then the superintendent of the district will write a letter asking the D.O.E. to expedite the whole process and you will get licensed quickly. If you apply for certification and then get hired, the same would apply. However, if you apply through the individual evaluation pathway and can't find a job quickly, then what I stated previously will be the most likely scenario.

In regards to paperwork, you have to send in all transcripts from every school you went to. When you fill out the application, you have to enter your experience and all that stuff. Also, you have to send in fingerprints. If you are coming to NYC anytime soon, you can go to the city D.O.E. and get fingerprinted there or at a local police station. For out of state I don't know how that works. If you plan on working in NYC, I suggest you get fingerprinted by the city DOE or else you will have to pay separate fees for fingerprinting to both the state and the city. Also, I suggest you take the LAST & ATS-W. These are the tests important for SLP certification. Additionally, you have to take an autism workshop, school violence prevention workshop, and child abuse prevention workshop. I took them online at workshopexpress.com.

I'll be in New York in about two weeks so I'm going to take advantage of that and see what I can get done. I've already started my profile on the website, and I did put down the individual evaluation pathway. I filled out all the forms they have on there, but I figured it would be simpler if I just got fingerprinted while I was up there. You have no idea how much you have helped me. My stress levels have gone down considerably lol thank you very much. and if you need any help with any clinics down here once you're done, let me know. I know a few people that can help. :) thank you again!
